Well Im back in the breeding Banggai game!

I bought a replacement male ... only to find it was female, but she paired up with my baby banggai and I thought great! they not related and will form a nice breeding pair ...

Well the weeks and months went bye and all was fine until one day the baby jumped out of the tank into the sump. I put the baby back in thinking strange, been fine for weeks. Was dead by morning, battered. The baby must also have been female and was accepted whilst juvenile but no longer.

Bought myself a new male and returned the female .. thankfully this one is male and was immediately evident as they paired off within 5 minutes of being released into the same tank!

The new male is quite a bit smaller than my female, but after only a couple of weeks of harrassment from the female, he now has a gob full of eggs!
Being small and his first breeding attempt I really doubt he will manage the 21 days. My wife managed to catch sight of him which must have only been a hour or so after the egg swaps and he had half the clutch dangling out of his mouth. Poor little sod couldnt fit them all in!

Not sure if to strip them from him to let him feed himself back up or to leave him to it ...

Will post a pic when I manage to teach him to stay still !!

21 days was up yesterday. The new male was visibly doing alot of mouthing of the eggs and spending more and more time in the fake urchin. Was finally able to catch him so stripped him ... was expecting fry, but he spat out eggs.

They have clearly visible eyes, two black lines, but still within the egg sack and still with visible egg yolk.

One hurridly assesmbled egg tumbler later (10pm is not a good time to start finding and assembling bits together).

Hopefully they will hatch at some point today.

One appeared to have managed to get its tail out of the egg sack last night but couldnt see much this morning.

FINGERS CROSSED !!!

How i stripped the eggs from My Male Banggai Cardinal (Pterapogon kauderni).

Now for the sad news whilst at a club meet the water tumbler was dislodged and tipped into the sump so the fry are in there hopefully i may see the odd one but im not hopeful
Would fire the babysitter but it was the mother in law :(

But looks like i may be getting some more eggs later i do recommend you try to let the male keep the eggs as long as possible so at lest they come out free swimming they will be easier to raise and probably require the water tumbler.

OK its also best to separate the fry so less competition for food and the bigger fry killing the smaller from bullying

Attempt failed. Ended up flooding breeding trap and the prob overflowed into sump. Cant find any. I need to soirce a smaller feed pump for it. Less than a eheim 300 compact on lowest flow setting. About half or a quarter flow be ideal. Air driven doesnt work for me as water level in sump too low or tank trap too high depending on how you look at it ...
